CHICAGO, IL — A devastating hit-and-run crash in the Pilsen neighborhood has left a community mourning the loss of 22-year-old Marcella Herrera and praying for the recovery of her fiancé, 21-year-old Mauricio Leyva, as authorities search for the driver responsible.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m. on July 19, 2025, in the 2000 block of South Ashland Avenue. The couple was crossing Ashland Avenue in the north crosswalk at Cullerton Street when a dark-colored Dodge Journey, traveling northbound at high speed, struck them and fled the scene.
Witnesses reported that the SUV was speeding past other vehicles before barreling through the intersection, nearly hitting another pedestrian. The impact left Herrera and Leyva on the median of Ashland Avenue. Marcella Herrera succumbed to multiple injuries at the scene, while Mauricio Leyva sustained facial injuries, including a broken nose, and possible back injuries. He remains in fair condition, recovering in a local hospital.

The suspect vehicle, described as a dark Dodge Journey, likely has damage to its front right bumper, right quarter panel, and right headlight. It was last seen turning west onto 19th Street from Ashland Avenue.
