Tragic Murder-Suicide in Gaines Township Leaves Two Dead

A devastating incident unfolded in Gaines Township, Michigan, on Monday, July 21, 2025, claiming the lives of two individuals in what authorities have confirmed as a murder-suicide. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as 43-year-old Elizabeth Weber and her 52-year-old boyfriend, Troy Balcer, both residents of Gaines Township.
The tragic events occurred just after 1 p.m. in a home located in the 6700 block of Madison Avenue SE, near Summer Shore Drive, north of 68th Street. Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute at the residence. While en route, the caller informed dispatchers that gunshots had been heard, escalating the urgency of the situation.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered Weber and Balcer deceased inside the home, both with apparent gunshot wounds. Autopsies conducted by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that Weber died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Balcer succumbed to a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators determined that the incident stemmed from a domestic argument that turned deadly, with Balcer fatally shooting Weber before taking his own life.
Weber’s daughter, who spoke to local media but chose to remain anonymous, shared that her mother and Balcer had been in a relationship for seven years and lived together in the home. She noted that while the couple had argued in the past, she was shocked by the violent outcome, as their disputes had not previously escalated to physical violence. “I was surprised because it’s never been like a physical thing,” she told News 8. She also mentioned that Balcer kept guns in the home, which had caused her anxiety, though she never anticipated such a tragic outcome.
Sgt. Scott Dietrich of the Kent County Sheriff’s Office addressed the community, emphasizing the importance of seeking help in volatile domestic situations. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly domestic disputes can escalate,” Dietrich said. “We urge anyone in a dangerous situation to separate, contact law enforcement, or reach out for support. In Kent County, dialing 211 can connect you with domestic violence resources, and we’re here to help de-escalate conflicts and ensure safety.”
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office expressed its condolences to the families and community affected by this tragedy, acknowledging the profound impact such incidents have on loved ones and neighbors. “The Kent County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the distress this causes within the community and is committed to the safety and well-being of all residents,” the office stated in a release.
