Teen Lives Cut Short: 18-Year-Old Faces DUI Charges in Fatal McHenry Crash

McHENRY, IL — A devastating three-vehicle crash in the early hours of Monday, July 28, 2025, has left two teenagers dead and another seriously injured, with the McHenry Police Department filing charges against 18-year-old Jason K. Land of Fox River Grove.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Richmond Road (Illinois Route 31) and McCullom Lake Road. According to the McHenry Police Department, Land was driving a red 2006 Audi A4 southbound on Richmond Road when he collided with a black 2015 Nissan Sentra at the intersection. The force of the crash also caused the vehicles to strike a parked, unoccupied 2003 Toyota Echo in the 1800 block of Richmond Road.
The Nissan Sentra, carrying a 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, was overturned in the collision. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office. Authorities have withheld the victims’ names to allow time for family notifications. The impact was severe, scattering debris across the roadway and destroying a communications box.
Land, the sole occupant of the Audi, was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with serious injuries. He was reported to be in critical but stable condition upon arrival. After being released from the hospital on Monday afternoon, Land was taken into custody and booked into the McHenry County Jail.
Court records indicate that Land faces multiple charges stemming from the crash, including:
– Two counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Causing Death (Class 2 Felonies)
– Two counts of Driving Under the Influence (Class A Misdemeanors)
– Two counts of Driving Under the Influence with a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08 or More (Class A Misdemeanors)
– One count of Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash (Petty Offense)
The McHenry County Regional Crash Assistance Team, comprising officers from the McHenry, Woodstock, Spring Grove, Harvard, Cary, and Johnsburg Police Departments, responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The intersection was partially closed for several hours, reopening by 8 a.m. on Monday.
Authorities are still working to determine the precise cause of the crash, including whether speed or running a red light contributed to the incident. The McHenry Police Department is seeking information from the public and encourages anyone with details to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 815-363-2599 or the anonymous tip line at 815-363-2124.
