Space Force Mourns Loss of Brig. Gen. Chandler “Fulcrum” Atwood, Founding Leader of Space Operations Command

It is with deep and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Brigadier General Chandler Atwood, known to many by his call sign, “Fulcrum.” He passed away on June 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that has shaped the very foundation and future of Space Operations Command. His death is not only a loss to our command and the United States Space Force, but to the countless lives he influenced with his leadership, integrity, and humanity.
From the earliest days of Space Operations Command in 2020, Fulcrum was at the forefront of innovation, strategic vision, and unshakeable dedication. He was instrumental in the stand-up of Space Delta 7, provided steady and insightful leadership while guiding the S2 (intelligence directorate), and served with distinction as our Field Command Deputy Commander. Most recently, he continued his exemplary service as the Director of Intelligence (J2) at U.S. Space Command.
General Atwood was not only a brilliant leader and military strategist—he was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light. Those privileged to work alongside him describe a man of unwavering principle, deep humility, and profound mission focus. He led with quiet confidence, always placing the needs of the mission and the well-being of his team above all else. In every capacity he served, Fulcrum elevated those around him and inspired a culture of excellence, accountability, and trust.
The void left by his passing will be felt deeply across our formations. Yet, we are committed to honoring his legacy by carrying forward the traditions, standards, and ethos he instilled. Space Operations Command will continue to build upon the foundation Fulcrum helped create—with the same grace, focus, and commitment he exemplified every day.
Brig Gen Atwood’s family, in their grief, shared words that beautifully capture the spirit of remembrance:
“If you don’t remember them out loud, they die twice. Honor your grief, for it is sacred. It is a testament to the depth of your heart. And in time, through the pain, you will find healing – not because you have forgotten, but because you have learned how to carry both love and loss together.”
We will remember him. Out loud. With reverence, with pride, and with enduring love.
In accordance with the wishes of General Atwood’s family, additional details surrounding his passing and any commemorative services will be shared as appropriate and when available. We respect their privacy and extend our unwavering support during this incredibly difficult time.
Force Base or Schriever Space Force Base, local support services are also available and ready to assist during this time of grief and remembrance.
Brigadier General Chandler “Fulcrum” Atwood’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege to serve alongside him. His legacy will live on in the missions we execute, the values we uphold, and the voices who will continue to remember him out loud.
Blue skies, Fulcrum. We’ve got the watch.
