OPELIKA, AL — On Monday, July 21, 2025, the Opelika Police Department, in collaboration with the Lee County SWAT Team, arrested 28-year-old Mykiel Sanchez Holmes in connection with a shooting at the Grub Mart convenience store on Columbus Parkway. The incident, which occurred on the evening of Sunday, July 20, 2025, left a 31-year-old man critically injured.

The arrest took place around 3:00 p.m. when authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1400 block of Crawford Road. Holmes was apprehended without incident and charged with attempted murder. He is currently being held at the Lee County Jail as the investigation continues.

According to the Opelika Police Department, officers responded to a report of an assault with injuries at the Grub Mart, located at 1000 Columbus Parkway, around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders provided immediate aid before transporting him to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Investigators have determined that Holmes and the victim were acquaintances with a history of conflict, including a prior altercation. While the shooting is believed to have stemmed from a personal dispute, authorities have not released further details about the events leading up to the incident. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed to protect his family’s privacy.
