Mass Shooting in South Chicago Leaves One Dead, Three Injured

A tragic mass shooting in the early hours of Saturday, July 19, 2025, claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and left three others wounded on Chicago’s Southeast Side. The incident occurred in the 8200 block of South Houston Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood, prompting a swift response from Chicago police.
At approximately 4:52 a.m., officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a 20-year-old male, identified as Tanijay Peterson, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Peterson was immediately transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Three additional victims were injured in the shooting and were also taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. A 22-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to her right arm and is reported to be in good condition. A 25-year-old man and a 38-year-old man each suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and remain in serious condition, according to authorities.
As of Saturday evening, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, with Area Two detectives leading the effort to uncover the motive and identify those responsible.
