Authorities in Birmingham have identified the teenager killed in a Saturday afternoon shooting at an apartment complex as 16-year-old George Camarius Daniel, a student at Huffman High School. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death, marking yet another painful loss in the city’s ongoing struggle with violent crime.

Police said East Precinct officers were dispatched around 4 p.m. to the 1000 block of Huffman Road after an initial report of a traffic crash. When they arrived, they discovered Daniel outside a vehicle, unresponsive. Despite lifesaving efforts from Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:30 p.m.

A second teenager sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment. His name has not been released. Investigators believe several individuals were gathered at the location prior to the gunfire, though a motive remains unclear.

The Birmingham Police Special Operations Bureau took one suspect into custody and detained two others for questioning. No formal charges have been filed, and detectives continue to collect evidence, review surveillance video, and interview witnesses.

Daniel’s death marks the 53rd homicide in Birmingham this year, a troubling statistic that underscores the impact of gun violence on the city’s youth. Police urge anyone with information to contact detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

As family, friends, and classmates grieve the sudden loss of a young life, community leaders continue to call for solutions to end the cycle of violence. George will be remembered as a son, a friend, and a student whose future was tragically cut short.
