Grieving Parents Collapse as 17-Year-Old Son Fatally Shot in Birmingham Apartment

A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot late Thursday night in a barrage of gunfire that erupted in Birmingham’s Collegeville public housing community, marking the city’s second teenage homicide in less than a week.
The Birmingham Police Department reported that North Precinct officers were dispatched at approximately 11:30 p.m. to the 2900 block of 29th Avenue North following a report of a person shot.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Lorenzo Davis Jr., 17, unresponsive inside an apartment. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene at 11:50 p.m.
According to Birmingham Police spokesperson Officer Truman Fitzgerald, multiple rounds were fired from outside the apartment. Investigators are still working to determine whether Davis was shot while inside the apartment or if he was struck outside and sought refuge indoors.
The apartment sustained significant damage, with several bullet holes visible in the structure. A nearby parked vehicle was also struck by gunfire. Evidence markers placed at the scene, primarily indicating spent shell casings, suggest a high volume of shots were fired.
No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified as the investigation into the motive for the shooting continues.
The tragedy drew a large crowd of family members, friends, and neighbors to the crime scene, many visibly distraught. Both of Davis’s parents were present, overcome with grief as they collapsed outside the apartment complex.
This shooting marks Birmingham’s 47th homicide of 2025. Across Jefferson County, a total of 72 homicides have been recorded this year, including those within Birmingham city limits.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Birmingham Police homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 205-254-7777 to assist in the ongoing investigation into this tragic act of violence.
