Tom Bean, TX — July 3, 2025 – A domestic disturbance call escalated into a deadly deputy-involved shooting late Thursday night in Grayson County, leaving one man dead and prompting an investigation into the incident.

According to a press release from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched shortly after 11:00 p.m. on July 3 to a residence in the 400 block of Bonham Street in the small town of Tom Bean. The call was in response to a 911 report of a family disturbance involving a reportedly armed individual at the location.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered 32-year-old Nathan Edwards, who was allegedly armed and behaving in a threatening manner. Specific details regarding the nature of his weapon or the behavior that prompted the use of deadly force have not yet been released, but officials confirmed that Edwards’s actions led to a deputy discharging their firearm.

Edwards was struck by the gunfire. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but despite efforts to render aid, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His identity was confirmed by the Sheriff’s Office early Friday morning.

No deputies were injured during the encounter.

Ongoing Investigation

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office has stated that an internal review is underway, and an outside agency may be called in to ensure the investigation is handled with transparency and impartiality, in accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

The deputy involved has not been publicly identified, and it is unclear whether they have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation—though such a move is typically standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings.

Officials have not disclosed whether body camera footage or dashcam video captured the shooting, but the Sheriff’s Office indicated that all evidence is being collected and reviewed, and any relevant materials will be turned over to the appropriate authorities for further examination.

Community Response and Family Impact

The incident has sent shockwaves through the small community of Tom Bean, a rural town with a population of under 1,000. Family members of Nathan Edwards have not yet issued a public statement, and it is not currently known who else was present at the time of the altercation or if any family members were directly threatened.

Residents in the area described a heavy law enforcement presence late Thursday night into early Friday morning as deputies secured the scene and began their investigation.

While the Sheriff’s Office stressed that the situation posed a significant threat, and that the use of force was prompted by immediate danger, community advocates are urging a thorough and fair review to ensure that all actions taken were lawful and proportionate.

A Call for Clarity

As with any deadly force encounter involving law enforcement, questions about escalation, de-escalation tactics, mental health, and the chain of events leading up to the shooting remain central to the ongoing inquiry. Advocates for both law enforcement and community oversight are expected to closely monitor the case as more facts come to light.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office stated in its release:

“This was a tragic and unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. We are committed to conducting a full and transparent investigation.”

More information will be released to the public as the investigation progresses. Anyone with additional details or who may have witnessed the events on Bonham Street is encouraged to contact the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office directly.
