On Sunday, July 20, 2025, at approximately 12:42 p.m., the Corning Police Department (CPD) responded to an emergency call reporting a shooting in the southwest corner of the village at Harrison Avenue, Corning, Ohio. Officers arrived promptly at the scene, where they found longtime village resident Scott Thompson, who had sustained two gunshot wounds to his abdomen and wrist.

First responders provided immediate care, and Mr. Thompson was transported to Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, where he received trauma treatment. As of Monday, July 21, 2025, he remained in critical condition. The hospital was not placed on lockdown, and there was no involvement of a Genesis Police Department, as no such agency exists in this context.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was called to the scene by CPD Chief of Police Christopher Iacone to conduct a detailed forensic analysis. The Perry County Sheriff’s Office assisted in establishing a secure perimeter around the crime scene, ensuring public safety. Additional support was provided by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, contributing to a coordinated response to the incident.

CPD has taken several pieces of evidence into custody and detained two individuals who may be connected to the shooting. No arrests have been formally announced, and the investigation remains active. The department expressed gratitude to the responding agencies, including the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Athens FBI, and BCI, for their swift and professional assistance in managing the situation.
