Children Wounded in West Philly Pool Shooting: Teen Suspect Faces Charges

A 17-year-old suspect, Keon Kiah, has been arrested and charged in connection with a mass shooting at the Christy Recreation Center Pool in West Philadelphia that injured five people, including two children. The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, near 56th and Christian Streets, disrupted a family-friendly environment, leaving the community shaken and prompting renewed calls for action against youth gun violence.
The shooting occurred around 4:05 p.m. on the opening day of the Christy Recreation Center’s pool, a popular spot for families seeking relief from the summer heat. According to Philadelphia police, approximately 75 people, many of them children, were at the pool when gunfire erupted. The violence stemmed from an earlier altercation at the rec center that was broken up by staff and a police officer. Kiah and several others reportedly returned to the scene, where he allegedly discharged a firearm, striking five individuals.
The victims included a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, both of whom sustained graze wounds and were rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where they remain in stable condition. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the face and is in critical condition at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Another 16-year-old boy, shot in the hip, and a 32-year-old rec center employee, who suffered a graze wound, are also stable. None of the victims were inside the pool area at the time of the shooting.
Following the incident, Philadelphia police released surveillance footage showing Kiah and three other young males approaching the rec center before the gunfire. The footage captured the suspects fleeing down Christian Street, with Kiah seen retrieving a duffel bag from the pavement. An arrest warrant was issued for Kiah on Thursday, and he turned himself in to the Shooting Investigation Group on Friday evening, August 1, through arrangements made by his legal counsel. He faces 13 counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person, along with related firearms charges. Authorities are still seeking additional suspects seen in the footage.
“This is a devastating reminder of the gun violence plaguing our city,” said Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel, who grew up near the Christy Rec Center. “This was a safe haven for me as a child, and it’s unacceptable that our kids can’t enjoy these spaces without fear.” Bethel emphasized the role of surveillance cameras from the rec center and nearby Harrity Elementary in identifying the suspects.
Mayor Cherelle L. Parker addressed the incident, stating, “Our swimming pools must be safe havens for our young people and families, especially in the summer heat. We’re committed to ensuring this becomes a reality.” The rec center, closed temporarily after the shooting, reopened on Saturday, August 2, with increased security and crisis counselors available for children and staff. Community members expressed a mix of relief and unease, with local resident Michael Samuels recounting hearing gunshots while planning to bring his granddaughter to the pool.
The incident has reignited discussions about youth violence in Philadelphia. Community leaders, including State Representative Rick Krajewski, stressed the need to address trauma and invest in prevention programs. “We can’t ignore what happened here,” Krajewski said during a food giveaway event at the rec center on Friday, just days after the shooting. Senator Anthony H. Williams, who attended the event, emphasized continued support for the community, saying, “We’re here for those in need, emotionally or otherwise.”
The Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation reaffirmed its commitment to safety, noting that all cameras at the facility were operational, with plans to install five additional ones. “Christy Rec Center exists to serve our community, and we’re heartbroken by this senseless act,” the department stated. “We will work tirelessly with law enforcement to protect our spaces.”
Kiah, currently held in a juvenile detention facility, is expected to appear in court early next week. The district attorney’s office has not confirmed whether he will be tried as an adult, and additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses. Police are still seeking information about other suspects and urge the public to contact the Shooting Investigation Group at 215-686-8271 or submit anonymous tips through Philadelphia Crime Stoppers at (215) 546-TIPS.
As Philadelphia grapples with this latest act of violence, residents like Duane Lee, who brought his young daughter to the rec center’s playground on Saturday, remain determined to reclaim their community spaces. “We can’t let these tragedies stop us,” Lee said. “We have to keep our kids engaged and push forward.” Yet, the incident underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing youth access to guns and the need for comprehensive solutions to ensure safe havens for all.
