FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA — A devastating accident on Thursday afternoon has claimed the life of a Canon man, leaving a small rural community in mourning. The crash, which involved a bicycle and a pickup truck, occurred on Rice Creek Road in Franklin County just after 3:15 p.m., according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Sgt. William Jordan. The victim has been identified as 58-year-old Walter Terry Strickland, a longtime resident of Canon.

Authorities say Strickland was riding his bicycle northbound on Rice Creek Road when, for reasons still under investigation, he veered into the southbound lane, directly into the path of an oncoming 2023 Chevy Silverado.

The Incident

“Troopers from Post 52 Hartwell responded to a crash involving a bicyclist and a pickup truck,” Sgt. Jordan confirmed. “A subject on a bicycle was traveling north on Rice Creek Road in Franklin County when it traveled into the southbound lane and into the path of a 2023 Chevy Silverado. The bicyclist was struck by the vehicle and came to rest in the roadway.”

Emergency responders arrived swiftly on the scene, and Strickland was transported to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital. Tragically, despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital a short time later.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Investigation and Findings

According to Sgt. Jordan, the preliminary investigation determined that Walter Strickland was at fault in the crash. “It was determined that the bicyclist was at fault and no charges will be taken against the driver of the Silverado,” he said, adding that impairment has not been ruled out, and toxicology tests are currently pending.

The driver of the Silverado remained on the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. There is no indication of speeding or reckless driving on the part of the pickup truck driver, and authorities have stated that no citations or charges are expected.

Community Reaction

The death of Walter Strickland has left many in Canon and Franklin County shaken. A familiar face in the area, Strickland was known to many as an avid cyclist who often rode the backroads around town. Friends and neighbors are remembering him as a quiet, kind man who enjoyed the outdoors and valued his solitude and independence.

“He kept to himself, but everyone knew who Terry was,” said longtime neighbor Lloyd Jennings. “You’d see him riding all the time down these roads. It’s just heartbreaking to know he won’t be coming by anymore.”

Road Safety Concerns

While officials have noted that the crash was the result of the cyclist entering the wrong lane, the incident has reignited conversations about road safety for cyclists in rural areas like Franklin County. Many of the roads, including Rice Creek Road, are narrow and winding, often lacking dedicated bike lanes or clear shoulders.

“This is a tragedy that reminds us of how vulnerable cyclists can be, especially on rural roads,” said Franklin County Commissioner Anna Perkins. “We must continue to look at ways to make our roads safer for everyone — drivers, bikers, and pedestrians alike.”

Final Notes

As the investigation continues pending toxicology results, the Georgia State Patrol has asked the public to respect the privacy of Strickland’s family during this difficult time.

There are no plans for charges against the driver of the pickup, and authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected.

Funeral arrangements for Walter Terry Strickland have not yet been announced. Friends and family are expected to gather in the coming days to honor his life and remember the quiet man who lost his life in a sudden and tragic accident.
