The Minneapolis Police Department, led by Chief Brian O’Hara, confirmed the incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. on July 4, 2025, near the 2100 block of Dupont Avenue North, an area not unfamiliar with gun violence but never desensitized to its consequences.

According to authorities, the response was swift—triggered by a ShotSpotter activation and a flurry of 911 calls from nearby residents jolted awake by the sound of gunfire. When Fourth Precinct officers arrived, they found a male victim in his 20s suffering from a critical gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he tragically succumbed to his injuries at North Memorial Health.

Preliminary reports indicate the victim and another man were riding electric scooters when the shots rang out. The victim collapsed almost immediately after being struck, and his companion promptly called for help. That quick response, while courageous and commendable, was sadly not enough to save his life.

Chief O’Hara addressed the public with both solemnity and urgency:

“This tragic loss of life is something we, as a community, simply cannot accept. Our investigators are working urgently to determine whether this was a targeted or random act, and we need the public’s help.”
