PORT ALLEN, LA — 3-Year-Old Jalayah Brown, Who Had Autism, Found Dead in Neighborhood Pool After Going Missing

PORT ALLEN, LA — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Port Allen on Tuesday after 3-year-old Jalayah Brown, a nonverbal child with autism, was found dead in a neighborhood swimming pool following an urgent search through the Antonia Plantation Estates subdivision.
According to the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the neighborhood off Willow Glen Avenue after Jalayah was reported missing from her home. The toddler, described by family members as sweet, curious, and nonverbal, had wandered away unnoticed, sparking immediate concern and a swift response from law enforcement and the community.
Frantic Search Ends in Tragedy
The search for Jalayah began around sunset, with law enforcement officers, emergency responders, and dozens of neighbors working together to locate the missing child. As nightfall approached, the urgency grew due to Jalayah’s age, condition, and the dangers posed by the surrounding area.
Sadly, the search ended in tragedy when deputies located Jalayah unresponsive in a swimming pool behind a nearby home. It remains unclear how long she had been in the water. Paramedics responded immediately and attempted life-saving measures, but Jalayah was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pool was located just a few houses away from where she was last seen. Authorities have not released details about the pool’s accessibility or whether it had any fencing.
Autism and the Risk of Wandering
Jalayah’s death underscores a heartbreaking and all-too-common risk for children with autism. Wandering, also known as elopement, is reported in nearly half of all children on the autism spectrum, particularly among those who are nonverbal or have limited communication.
Many autistic children are drawn to bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, or pools, often because of their calming appearance—yet drowning remains a leading cause of death for autistic children who go missing. Jalayah’s tragic passing is a stark reminder of these dangers and the vital need for preventive measures.
Community Mourns Loss of Young Life
The Antonia Plantation Estates neighborhood has been left devastated by the loss of little Jalayah. Many residents joined in the search and later stood in stunned silence after hearing the news of her death.
“She was just a beautiful little girl,” one neighbor said. “We were out here walking the streets, calling her name, praying she was safe. This is just too painful.”
Throughout the night, community members left flowers, stuffed animals, and candles near the pool area in remembrance of Jalayah. Grief counselors were also made available to assist both the family and first responders.
Investigation Underway
While the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the details surrounding the incident, there has been no word on whether any charges will be filed. Authorities are reviewing how the child accessed the pool and whether safety codes or fencing regulations were followed.
Officials emphasized that the focus remains on supporting Jalayah’s grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
