Katherine Jennings Killed in Fatal McDowell County Car Crash

McDowell County, NC – A devastating crash along U.S. Highway 221 South on the evening of Monday, June 30, has claimed the life of Katherine Jennings, leaving a deep sense of loss in its wake for her loved ones and the local community.
The fatal collision occurred around 7:37 p.m. near the boundary between McDowell and Rutherford Counties. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash involved two vehicles — a white 2025 Honda Pilot and a black 2024 Toyota GR86.
The Honda Pilot was being driven by Fasan Dayo, a 34-year-old resident of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Investigators say Dayo was attempting to pass several vehicles while traveling southbound when he veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the Toyota, which was being driven by Jacob McKinney, of Nebo.
The collision was severe. Following the impact, Dayo’s vehicle left the roadway and rolled. Both Fasan Dayo and his passenger, Katherine Jennings, tragically died at the scene from injuries sustained during the crash. Emergency responders confirmed their deaths shortly after arriving.
In the other vehicle, 23-year-old Jacob McKinney survived but suffered serious injuries. He was quickly airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he remains hospitalized in critical condition. His passenger, Christopher Corn, also from Nebo, was not as fortunate — Corn was pronounced deceased at the scene, adding to the toll of this heartbreaking incident.
Multiple emergency agencies, including McDowell EMS, Rutherford County EMS, the Glenwood and Union Mills Fire Departments, and the McDowell County Rescue Squad, responded promptly to the scene. Their efforts were focused on saving lives, treating the injured, and managing the wreckage, which closed the affected portion of US-221 South for several hours.
Authorities continue to investigate what led to the fatal miscalculation on the part of Fasan Dayo. Preliminary findings indicate that his attempt to pass several cars in a no-passing zone directly contributed to the deadly head-on collision. Investigators are also working to determine whether other factors such as speed or driver distraction played a role.
The loss of Katherine Jennings has left her family, friends, and community members in profound grief. Those close to Katherine describe her as warm, compassionate, and full of life — someone who touched others deeply with her kind heart and gentle presence. Her sudden passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes and support from those who knew her best.
Likewise, the community of Nebo is mourning the loss of Christopher Corn, remembered as a loyal friend and a man known for his humor and generosity. As Jacob McKinney continues to recover in the hospital, friends and family are rallying behind him with hope and prayers.
As the North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues its investigation, the pain left behind from this tragic crash will linger. In a single moment, several lives were forever changed — and for the families of Katherine Jennings and the other victims, the road to healing will be long and difficult.
Funeral arrangements for Katherine Jennings, Fasan Dayo, and Christopher Corn are expected to be announced in the coming days as loved ones prepare to honor their memories and find comfort in community and shared grief.
