SAN ANGELO, Texas — A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday night, July 23, 2025, when a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Roosevelt Street and Rio Concho Drive resulted in the death of 19-year-old Joe Angel Martinez III, a San Angelo resident. The San Angelo Police Department (SAPD) responded to the scene around 10:00 p.m. after reports of a motor vehicle accident, only to discover a far more complex situation than initially anticipated.

Officers arrived at the east side of San Angelo to find a vehicle that had collided with a mailbox, sustaining significant damage. Inside, they located Martinez, who was unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound—a detail that transformed the incident from a routine crash into a homicide investigation. Emergency medical personnel rushed Martinez to Shannon Medical Center, where, despite efforts, he was pronounced deceased.

Police Chief Travis Griffith addressed the public in a press conference on July 24, 2025, emphasizing that the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence. “We believe there’s a connection to a suspect,” Griffith stated, noting that the SAPD’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively pursuing leads to uncover the circumstances surrounding Martinez’s death. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives limiting public information to protect its integrity.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to San Angelo Crimestoppers at 325-658-HELP (4357). “We’re working through the leads we have,” Griffith said. “I believe we have some of the best investigators around, and I think we’re going to find justice for this victim.”

The loss of Joe Angel Martinez III has deeply affected the San Angelo community. Friends and family have taken to social media to express their grief, describing Martinez as a kindhearted young man with a bright future. Griffith extended his condolences, asking residents to keep Martinez’s family in their thoughts during this difficult time. “San Angelo residents have lost a loved one,” he said.

As the investigation continues, the SAPD is also highlighting the strain on departmental resources, with Griffith noting the need for additional officers to handle such cases. No arrests have been made as of July 24, 2025, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.

In the wake of this tragedy, San Angelo authorities are reminding drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution on the roads, particularly at night, to prevent further loss of life. The community continues to mourn Martinez, rallying together to honor his memory and support his grieving loved ones.
